Ninja Scroll Review

-4/5/2001-
I'm about three weeks late with this. Yeah, I'm lazy. But after watching Ninja Scroll about 4 complete times during the five-day period I rented it(gotta love Blockbuster), I'd say it still remains quite well in my memory.

Ninja Scroll is indeed the first uncut dubbed anime I've ever seen. And by "uncut", I don't mean FUNimation's definetion of it(just all the visual content left in really doesn't cut the mustard). Ninja Scroll is NOT for little kids. It's not a pre-requesite to Pokemon. Its got blood, gore, violence, sex, nudity, swearing... and you can see/hear just about all of that by watching the first 10 minutes. Whether you take that as good or bad is entirely up to you.
Ninja Scroll, set in a Feudal Japan where certain people have amazing abilities, revolves around a vagabond named Jubei Kibigami. He eventually meets up with a Koga Ninja(a warrior of a small Ninja clan) named Kagero, a girl who's ability to taste poison due to her body being completely filled with venom makes her an "untouchable" fighter. Being a warrior, a beautiful woman and unable to be touched by anyone(anyone who does is infected with the poison, and dies soon after) makes her have some serious problems with her emotions.

The Good
Excellent animation, great fight scenes. While some of the fighting is... err, disgusting(at one point a certain villain drinks the blood right off his foe's freshly torn-off arm), it really gives off a realistic feel. The sexual content can be deemed good or bad depending on if you're into that... I personally find some of it entertaining, but that's only because I'm a guy. The plot is amazing. Only on my third viewing of the flick did I fully grasp Jubei's actions at the end. Very good.
The Bad
Well... all I could find that's POSSIBLY annoying with Ninja Scroll is the somewhat-offensive and sometimes overuse of sexual content. There's a couple scenes where rape takes place, and at least one of those I had to admit weren't really necessary or effected the plot whatsoever. I originally thought that Shijima's "fingering" of Kagero was his way of controlling her, but later after watching NS again realized that wasn't the case(his strings do the controlling). So basically, that whole scene was just added for either the effect, or just for an extra sex scene. Sure, it really isn't NECESSARY... but I'm not complaining.
The Ugly
Nothing overly-bad, horrible or terrible... maybe it could have been longer?
Final Thought
Really good movie. Extremely impressive anime. I loved it. Now go watch it.
