Metal Slug X Review
It's already been over a week since I got my hands on the Playstation Edition of this fine title, but it doesn't matter. Being the Super Procrastinator that I am, I shall review the game off of memory. Yay for me.
If I remember right, the original Metal Slug X was the sequel to the original Neo Geo title, amazingly titled Metal Slug(I know, it's impossible to understand). Both seemed to have their own "cult" following of arcade-lovers, who chucked thousands of their lil' quarters into the games at the local arcade all day before the Neo Geo arrived. I've never been a fan of arcade games. Or PC games, for that matter. But, when I heard about this "great oldie" being re-released on the Playstation, I couldn't resist. Heck... it's either that, or whatever the title is of the latest Tomb Raider title Eidos spit out.
Graphics. Since I'm a huge fan of the classics(or "OLD-SKOO" as you probably call it), I was in heaven from the start. It's 2D. And it was made only several odd years ago, folks. Add in some nice visualations, explosions, and you've got yourself some SUPA graphics for a guy like me. 10/10. You had me at 2D... you had me at 2D.
Gameplay. The object of the game is very simple: destroy everything. With guns. And even bigger guns. And tanks. And Heavily-Armed Camels. While this may sound... oh, I dunno, a bit narrow, it gets the job done. Because, when destroying everything in sight is put into a 2D setting with good graphics, it's actually pretty entertaining. 8.5/10.
Plot. From what I can understand, the Government uncovered the mummies, who knew about the aliens, and the aliens decided they'd help the Government because they knew about the aliens, then the aliens double-cross the Government's plan of world domination and the Government has to work with the 4 Special Agents sent to stop the Government and the aliens. As for the mummies, they mysteriously dissapear after Stage 2. The funny thing about the plot is you're probably saying "red teh istructon maneul dumy". I did. The "plot" is left a mystery for us to never solve. I can only guess the Mummies were behind it all along. 1/10.
Sound. A decent soundtrack. Of course, that's saying you're actually managing to listen to it during all of the gunfire, screaming, explosions, and voice overs. Which, I might mention, are pretty impressive. The voice overs are almost slim and none, though, and what there is was obviously recorded at a very poor quality. Guess that's what you get from a remake of an old game though, I suppose. 7/10.
Replay Value. Considering the amount of extra options there are in the game(several million), after completing the game once I lost almost all interest in playing again. Sure, trying to rack up cool points with the hot chick in charge of the Battle School is a great task to work for... but it just requires too much time & Super Skill at being a master of the game. I'm not a master of arcade games. Like I said, I hardly like 'em at all. So, sitting around trying to work on getting through every impossible task set wasn't my idea of fun. Now I know what one of those often heard of "Common Gamers" feel like... 3.5/10.
Final Thought/Overall Rating
Sure has it's ups and downs, doesn't it? All in all, MSX is basically just a nice thrill for non-arcade fans like myself, and probably an INSANE SQUIRELLY AMOUNT OF GAMEPLAY for the arcade buffs. It was nice to see a return to the classics/OLD SKOO once again, but I'd prefer it in a different genre. 5/10. With the way the ratings went, an average overall rating is the only rational thing I can think of...
