Adult Swim Review/Synopsis
-September 10th, 2001-
With Adult Swim growing two weeks old this week, things haven't looked better on Ted Turner's/His Highness' Cartoon Network. Swearing runs rampant, violence is at an all-time high, and even some sexual inuendo has managed to slip itself in. And no, I'm not talking about New York.
Although I still say they could have done this all a whole lot sooner(like, say, three years ago), I have to admit it's pleasing to see what's going on... going on. Never in a million years did I expect to hear Zorak say "I'm gonna kick your ass", or a dead goldfish explain how Fish Heaven only has loose women. And so, it's REVIEW TIME. Suit up!
Home Movies
Plot: Elementary School kids with the mental capacity of Harvard Scholars film home movies as a passtime, instead of playing Video Games and looking at pornography on the internet like they're supposed to.
I think that after the first viewing, every human being on the face of the planet wanted it cancelled. But after a second episode, the quality seems to be improving. The style of animation isn't exactly great, but, then again, neither is ANY show on the entire block, excluding Cowboy Bebop. The "realistic" way the voice acting is performed adds for some slightly amusing moments. Although it's improved, though, I doubt it will last(that is to say the Adult Swim as a whole will).
The Brak Show
Plot: Brak lives with his parents, a Dwarfish ripoff of Ricki from I Love Lucy and a white-haired seahag I assume is his mother, and Zorak tells everybody to get the hell out of his way. Get the hell out of his way!
AKA "Brak Knows Best", "Leave it to Brak", "The Braks of Life", or "Give me a Brak!", The Brak Show is yet another attempt of giving the one and only Brak another shot at a show. The humor's decent at the most, and that's only because Zorak manages to somehow stick around(although I see no reason why he'd want to) during the entire show. And yet again, they MUST make Brak sing annoying musical numbers, only in a very scarce amount this time around. I'd prefer none, but apparently Ghost Planet finds it funny to annoy people as well as make them laugh. I can't blame them.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law
Plot: Birdman apparently got through Law School sometime within the last 20 years, and now serves as a lawyer for many of the Cartoon characters of the 60s-70s who require legal assistance. Go figure.
For Space Ghost's eternal rival, the guy has a pretty impressive show of his own. Sure, he doesn't interview/waste Celebritys' time like his "good pal", but he helps out old cartoon stars and their legal problems! This just reaked with homosexual undertones during the first episode. The humor was B+ quality, at the most, and out of all the GP cartoons on the block, Harvey's would probably have to be the edgiest.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Plot: Alright, so we've got oversized, talking, floating, rapping, poorly-animated pieces of Fast Food. That must save the day, or something. And they have a computer, with the internet.
Yep, that's about it.
Sealab 2021
Plot: 70's-style cartoon characters deal with the absolute horror of living together in an underwater Sealab, and deal with the everyday follies of life. Like, say, the blond chick you live with ovulating, or the old geezer wanting to run his own Illegal Radio Show.
#2 in the humor department, without a doubt. Most of the jokes are funny simply because it's unbelievable to be seeing such "edgy" stuff(AKA anything they'll play on MTV during the day, at any time) on a network that's dominated by Power Puff Girls and a purple Epileptic dog.
Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Plot: Nobody truely knows for sure.
Dominator of the Sunday Night ratings on CN for over 4 years, SGCTC has no rival, equal, or superior. There is nothing more to say, except for the fact that GP seems to be taking full advantage of being able to allow more stuff to make it to air.
Cowboy Bebop
Plot: Bounty Hunters, Honkey Tonk Women, Welsh Corgys, and plenty of boobs & guns to go around. Need I say more?
Saving the best for last, CN made it their best effort to use their adult lineup as a nice place to drop a popular, uncut anime, without the slightest bit of suspicion(although it sticks out like a sore thumb with all the humor cartoons around). Being an official SUPER OTAKU ANIME MASTER FREAK like myself, I enjoyed it quite well. It was like the typical Japanese Animation you can find at Blockbuster, except on cable and a commercial pops in between and during every show. In a word... it's good.
Basically, Adult Swim is probably the best thing to happen to CN's Sunday schedule. O' Canada!, Roger Ramjet, and a wacky Space Ghost random tossup just never seemed to cut it. It's about time ol' Teddy cleaned up Sunday(no offense, your majesty!)...
Yeah, I know, I watch too much TV.
